Sonic Margate  – 20.15 – 20.35
By Liotia

Liotia is a collaboration between singer/songwriter Abigail Hubbard and producer/engineer Matt Smyth. Both having grown up along the kent coast, they have dug deep into their seaside roots to create a soundscape for the work of Leon Hatcher.

The contrasts and conflicts of living in Margate are brought to life through sound. Highlighting seasonal differences and the economic struggles of an area in the grip of gentrification.

Liotia use a range of electric and electronic instruments to create a unique cinematic soundscape. Often likened to a halfway point between Little Dragon and Portsihead, Abi’s unique writing and vocal style add both intimately delivered poetic verse combined with emotional screams processed with a range of electronics devices.

Matt, often using found sounds as the basis of sound design combines synth programming and live drum machine performance, embellished with production processes that have their roots in the Dub mixing style pioneered by Lee Scratch Perry and King Tubby. (Matt having worked closely as an engineer with producer Adrian Sherwood at On U Sound’s Studio).

The duo released their debut EP So Close / Yours Tonight in July 2019
and are set to release ‘Blackout’ with Ramrock Red, featuring remixes from
Ashley Beedle’s African’s from Mars moniker and video by Swedish director
Helga Fannon.
